Mitsubishi UFJ Securities CEO Sharing

Mr. Trent Hagland, Non-Executive Director, Mitsubishi UFJ Securities - Hong Kong & Singapore, and a member of the MBA Advisory Board, spoke about his career path to becoming a CEO. In May 2012, Mr Hagland became the Chief Executive Officer of Mitsubishi UFJ Securities Hong Kong, where he oversaw operations in Capital Markets, Equities, Rates Trading and Sales, Credit Trading and Sales, and Structured Products. Subsequently, in the role of Head of Asia, Mr Hagland oversaw all securities-related business conducted by the Group in Asia, apart from Japan. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of both the MUS Hong Kong and MUS Singapore entities. The discussion enlightened students on how to use their MBA and their previous experience to achieve their career goals.

 

 Lombard Odier Capital Partner Career sharing with MBAs

 

Mr. Vincent Duhamel, Capital Partner and Head of Asia of Lombard Odier , told students about how he went from washing cars in Canada to joining the investment industry,  starting out at State Street Global Advisors, then moving to Goldman Sachs, SAIL Funds and finally Lombard Odier, a Swiss private banking organisation with over 200 years of history. Mr. Duhamel subsequently recruited one of our students as an intern.

Mr Simon Squibb, a Hong Kong based angel investor, told of his personal journey and his experiences in becoming an entrepreneur. Mr. Squibb is the CEO and founder of Nest Investments (an early stage venture capital firm), Founder and Chairman of Investable (a platform providing early stage venture investment opportunities for professional investors) and Fluid (an insight-driven creative agency). He has personally mentored more than 50 start-ups under various accelerator and incubator programmes including Nest x Infiniti, Nest x DBS and Nest x AIA.

Mr. Savio Kwan told our students The Alibaba Story about how the company went from RMB 500,000 to USD 250 Billion and explained his leadership philosophies. Mr. Kwan was President and COO at Alibaba and was an Independent Non-Executive Director on the Board of Alibaba.com from 2008 until the HKEX listed company went private in September 2012. He is also a Non-Executive Director of British American Tobacco. Since stepping down from Alibaba in 2015, Mr. Kwan has been running A&K Consulting as Partner and CEO which he co-founded with his partner to help start- up companies in China.

John Lo, the CFO of Tencent, shared his experience with our students on the development of  his career and told them about  how he was able to make a difference in a fast-growing internet giant. In particular, John explained how, as an accounting professional from a Big 4 environment,  he was prompted to make the career move and described  the types of personality that would present a good fit for a business that is constantly evolving.

 

 Meet the HR of luxury industry     

 

Mr. Lawrence Hung, a seasoned HR executive and previous Regional HR Director of Richemont, came to speak with students about the evolution of the luxury retail industry and the competitive landscape, as well as the search for talent and the cultural fit.
