Major and Minor Options for non-FBE Students (for 4-year curriculum)

Under the 4-year curriculum, students are provided with the flexibility to design their combination of disciplinary majors, minors and electives within and outside their home Faculties.  The Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE) offers 9 major programmes and 6 minor programmes to students outside the Faculty.

  2. Declaration
    • Students can start declaring their major/minor in the beginning of their 2nd year of study.  However, for those admitted before the 2015-16 intake, the eligibility of students’ declaration of an FBE major/minor will only be confirmed when their cumulative GPA at the end of the 2nd year of study (or upon completion of 4 regular semesters at HKU) is available.  You are also reminded to read through the important notes for BDI and QFin should you consider it as a second major.

  3. Requirements
    • For students admitted before the 2015-16 intake:  (i) a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above as of August 31 (excluding Summer Semester) at the end of the 2nd year of study (or upon completion of 4 regular semesters at HKU) must be obtained for eligibility to declare any major or minor offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics; (ii) students who have declared an FBE major/minor but do not fulfill the CGPA requirement at the end of their second year of study, their respective declaration will be removed from the SIS and they will be notified by email.
    • For students who declare Major in Business Design and Innovation (BDI), regardless of their intake year, they are required to undergo a selection process arranged by the BDI Programme Co-ordinator in the 2nd semester of their second year of study.
    • With effect from the 2016-17 intake, students considering to pursue a second major in Quantitative Finance (QFin) are required to undergo a selection process.
    • Students considering to pursue a second major in Asset Management and Private Banking (AMPB) are required to undergo a selection process.  AMPB is applicable to students of 2017-18 intake and onwards.

  4. Course Enrolment
    • All courses offered by FBE have quota restriction.  Students’ successful declaration of a major/minor offered by FBE will NOT guarantee them a place in the courses for fulfilling the major/minor requirements.
    • Some courses may have pre-requisite requirements.  Students should obtain a pass in the pre-requisite course(s) before taking the subsequent courses.
    • Course enrolment with timetable conflict will NOT be approved.
    • Double-counting is NOT allowed except for the 4 Faculty Core Courses under the "double-major" combination, i.e. ACCT1101 Introduction to financial accounting; ECON1210 Introductory Microeconomics; FINA1310 Corporate finance; and a statistics course as prescribed in the syllabuses. Where a course applies to more than a major or minor programme, a disciplinary elective (advanced level) must be taken in lieu of the overlapped courses. The specified Faculty Core Courses can be double-counted between the major curricula and students are required to take any free electives in lieu of the double-counted Faculty Core Courses.
    • Double-counting of the 4 Faculty Core Courses is only confined to the combination of "major-major". In other words, double counting of the Faculty Core Courses is NOT allowed for the combinations of "major-minor" nor "minor-minor".
    • Students are not permitted to enroll in mutually exclusive courses where significant portions of the course contents overlap with each other.  A disciplinary elective (advanced level) must be taken in lieu of the mutually exclusive course.  Please see the list of mutually exclusive courses under “Useful Information”.
    • The course MATH1009 Basic Mathematics for Business and Economics is NOT open to students from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science.
