Background Information of Hong Kong

Situated on the southeast coast of China and with a total area of 1,104 square kilometres (400 square miles), Hong Kong has a population of over 7 million people. It is a vibrant city that blends both east and west cultures, the “Asia’s World City” attracts tourists from around the world.

Climate

It is Winter in Hong Kong from December to February. The weather is cool, dry and cloudy, with occasional cold fronts. The average Temperature: 12℃ to 20 ℃.

Time

Standard time in Hong Kong is 8 hours ahead of GMT.

Currency

The legal tender is the Hong Kong dollar (HK$), which is linked to the US dollar, and trades at around HK$7.8 to US$1.

Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi services are widespread in Hong Kong. You can find free Wi-Fi hotspots at these locations in Hong Kong.

VISA Information

Passport holders of a number of countries can enter Hong Kong without a visa for a period of 90 days. Anyone wishing to stay longer than the visa-free period must apply for a visa before travelling to Hong Kong.

All visitors to Hong Kong must have valid travel documents, endorsed where necessary for Hong Kong. These should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure from Hong Kong. You may also visit the Immigration Department of Hong Kong for further details.

Arrival

Overseas participants may enter Hong Kong from the Hong Kong International Airport. When arriving in Hong Kong, passengers should proceed to the Immigration Hall.

You should have the following documents ready:

  • Valid passport.
  • A completed arrival card which should be completed prior going to Passport Control. This arrival card will be given to you by your airline prior landing or picked up near the Passport Control area.
  • Hong Kong residents need only present their Identity Card.

Arriving passengers clear Immigration in about 10 minutes, collect their baggage [baggage carousel will indicate the flight number on the big blue sign] and then proceed to the Arrivals Hall and Ground Transportation Centre. If you cannot find your baggage or would like to report on baggage damage, please approach your airline for assistance.

Departure

Passengers can check-in from airport, as well as from Hong Kong and Kowloon stations of the Airport Express Railway from one day in advance to 90 minutes before take-off for these airlines.

Passengers should check in well in advance of the departure of their flight. Please contact your airlines for more information on check-in times.

Access and Transportation


From Hong Kong International Airport

By Airport Express

Take the Airport Express from the Airport to Hong Kong Station (one-way fare HKD115). On exiting the train, on the same floor, there are multiple taxi stands. A taxi ride to the HKU main campus would take about 20 mins at a cost of approximately HKD60.

Participants and guests may also walk to Central Station (about 10 mins) from Hong Kong Station, and take the MTR Island Line to HKU station.

A direct taxi ride to the HKU main campus would take about 40 mins at a cost of approximately HKD400 (Via Western Harbour Tunnel). 

From Hong Kong West Kowloon Station

By MTR

Transit to MTR Kowloon Station via the overhead bridge on Exit M and take the Tung Chung Line to Hong Kong Station. On exiting the train, take the escalator to L2 Floor, there are multiple taxi stands. A taxi ride to the HKU main campus would take about 20 mins at a cost of approximately HKD60.

Participants and guests may also walk to Central Station (about 10 mins) from Hong Kong Station, and take the MTR Island Line to HKU station.

Take taxi at taxi stand on B2 level. A direct taxi ride to the HKU main campus would take about 20 mins at a cost of approximately HKD200 (Via Western Harbour Tunnel). 

From Hung Hom Station

By MTR

Transit to MTR within Hung Hom Station. Take the MTR West Rail Line to East Tsim Sha Tsui Station. On exiting the train, take the walk path that transit into Tsim Sha Tsui Station (The fare gates for East Tsim Sha Tsui and Tsim Sha Tsui Stations are separated. Two single tickets will have to be purchased). Take the MTR Tsuen Wan line toward Central station and transit in Central for MTR Island line to HKU station.
