What are the prerequisites for admissions?

  1. Recognised bachelor's degree
  2. Satisfactory GMAT/GRE score*
  3. Minimum TOEFL 550 (paper based)/ 80 (Internet based) or IELTS 6.5 band, with no subtest less than 5.5
  4. At least two years of postgraduate full-time work experience

* Applicants with more than 7 years of postgraduate full-time work experience might be exempted from this requirement. Exemption, if any, will be considered on a case-by-case basis. 

What factors are considered in the admissions decision?

We will consider the overall assessment of the degree honours/ GPA, work experience, GMAT/GRE score, referees' recommendations, personal statement and interview performance. We interview each of our short-listed candidates. Video interviews are conducted for overseas applicants.

I am not sure if I need to take the TOEFL.

An applicant who wishes to be admitted on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution outside Hong Kong where the language of teaching and/ or examination is not English is required to take the TOEFL.

How do I take the TOEFL test?

You should make your own arrangement to take the test. Details and forms are available from the International and Professional Examinations Division of the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (Tel: 852-3628-8787).

What is the HKU MBA code number for the TOEFL?

The HKU MBA code number for the TOEFL is 9671(Institution code) and 02(Department code).

I took the GMAT/GRE test a year ago. Is it still valid?

Test results within five years of application are valid from the date you take the test till the date of completing the online application.

What is the HKU MBA code number for the GMAT?

The HKU code number for the GMAT is FS2-WL-61([Institution: University of Hong Kong - School of Business & Economics - MBA/IMBA].

What is the HKU MBA code number for the GRE?

The HKU code number for the GRE is 4136. 

How much work experience is required to qualify for admissions?

The normal cut-off is two years of postgraduate full-time work experience. On average, our students have seven to eight years of work experience.
No industry is favoured over another. Experience in either the private sector or the public sector is considered relevant.

I have been self-employed / running a family business since graduating with a bachelor’s degree. Will my application be considered?

Yes, if you can provide the proof that you have been doing so for at least 2 years.

Do you count military service as work experience?

Yes, we believe that military experience is very valuable. We strongly encourage former military personnel onto our programmes, as they have proven leadership and interpersonal and team-building skills.

If I’ve been denied admission, may I receive feedback on my candidacy and appeal the decision?

We understand the enormous commitment of time and energy that goes into applying to business school, but unfortunately we're not able to offer individual feedback on denied applications. The Admissions Committee reviews each candidacy with great care and thoughtful consideration. The review process is extremely thorough, and all decisions are final. There is no process for appeal.

Can I apply more than once for admission?

Please note that candidates may only apply once per each academic year/intake. To re-apply, you will need to wait until admissions open for the next MBA class and then complete a whole new application.

What materials must be submitted along with my online application?

May I request  a waiver of the application fee?

Waiver of the application fee is not available. The application fee is HK$300 (non-refundable) paid online by Visa or MasterCard credit card.

How much is the tuition fee?

HK$468,000 payable in six instalments over two years and subject to change and final approval of The University of Hong Kong.

Are there any scholarships or financial aid?

Local students of the MBA Programme in full-time or part-time mode can apply for Non-means Tested Loan Scheme. They can also apply for the Continuing Education Fund for reimbursement of course fee up to a maximum of HK$20,000.

What is the status on accreditation?

The Faculty of Business and Economics is fully accredited by EQUIS (European Quality Information System) and AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business)

How can I get my student visa?

The Office of the Student Affairs will assist students in obtaining visas. In Hong Kong it is fairly easy to get a student visa. The Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) will act as the local sponsor for international students. For Mainland students the China Affairs Office (CAO) will be the sponsor. Both these offices will assist students in obtaining visas.
