Admission, Application and Tuition Fee

The Faculty of Business and Economics admits applicants to the full-time PhD programme only. Candidates without a research Master's degree shall be considered for admission to the four-year PhD programme, while those with a research Master's degree shall be considered for admission to the three-year PhD programme.

Admission Requirements

Degree Qualifications

An applicant for admission to PhD programmes should have a bachelor's degree with first class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university; or a Bachelor's degree with honours and a Master's degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university.

GMAT/GRE Requirements

An applicant must demonstrate his/her capability for graduate studies by obtaining a satisfactory score in the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) within a five-year period.

English Language Requirement

Applicants whose degree or equivalent qualification was awarded by an institution outside Hong Kong where the medium of instruction was not English will also have to meet one of the following English requirements.

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOFEL): minimum score of 80 (internet-based) or 550 (paper-based) taken within a two-year period; or
  • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): minimum overall band score of 6 with no component score lower than 5.5 taken within a two-year period
 
Admission Schedule

The application for admission in 2018/19 is now OPEN. The Main Round application deadline is December 1, 2017. The Faculty will consider applications submitted in the Main Round only. Applications received in the First and Second Clearing Round will not normally be considered.

Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), which was established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong to attract the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong's institutions. Initial Application to RGC:

September 1 (HKT 12:00 nn or GMT +8 hours) - December 1, 2017 (HKT 12:00 or GMT +8 hours)

Full Application to HKU:

September 1 - December 1, 2017 (HKT 23:59 or GMT +8 hours)

Main Round Application

September 1 - December 1, 2017

Result Announcement

Starting from March 2018

Arrival and Registration

August – September, 2018

Commencement of Study

September 1, 2018

 

Application Procedures

All applications should be submitted via the online application system of the Graduate School of HKU. Applicants should visit the Graduate School website (http://www.gradsch.hku.hk/gradsch/prospective-students/how-to-apply) for full details of the application process.

Applicants who are interested in applying for the PhD Programme in the Faculty of Business and Economics are advised to review the information available on this website concerning the programme and the respective fields of study. It is not a must for applicants to contact potential supervisors to discuss their proposed research areas at the application stage. All applications will be considered by the Faculty and a successful applicant will be assigned the most suitable supervisor(s) who has/have expertise in the applicant's research area.

The following materials are required for making an application and should be submitted via the online application system on or before December 1, 2017:

  • Completed online application form
  • Certificates and academic transcripts of undergraduate and postgraduate studies
  • Official score report of the GMAT or GRE [Institution codes: GMAT – FS2-WL-48; GRE – 2482]
  • Official score report of TOFEL or IELTS (if required) [Institution code: 9671; Department code: 99]
  • Research proposal
  • Two academic referee's reports (submitted directly from the referees)

Qualifying examinations to test the applicants’ abilities to follow the prescribed courses and/or interviews may be conducted.

 

Tuition Fees and Financial Assistance

For the academic year 2017-18, the tuition fee for full-time PhD programme is HK$42,100 p.a.
