Abstract:
Throughout history there have been many perspectives on the approach to planning cities, with a notable clash between dense, organically-formed urban spaces and suburban space planned around the automobile. Urban data analysis has been recently improved through publicly available high resolution data, allowing us to empirically investigate urban design principles of the past half century. We are currently focused on the analysis of local neighborhood features, including crime, land use, zoning, business and population demographics. We will discuss two directions of this work: 1. matching analyses to explore the relationship between business vibrancy and safety and 2. spatial modeling of the change in crime over the past decade. Philadelphia is an interesting case study for this work, with its rapid urban development in the last decade. We are very interested in exploring urban issues confronted in cities outside the US and comparison of the approaches to urban planning taken in the international community versus US cities.
